LA SOCIETE DES QUARANTE HOMMES ET HUIT CHEVAUX 🇨🇵 ENGLISH: 🇺🇸 "THE SOCIETY OF FORTY MEN AND EIGHT HORSES"
The organization (also known as "La Société") can trace its no roots back to 1920, when Joseph W. Breen and 15 other members of the American Legion, who were veterans of World War I, came together and founded it as an honor society for certain Legion members. They envisioned a new and different level of elite membership and camaraderie for leaders of the American Legion.
The title "40 & 8" comes from the box cars that were used to transport troops to the front in France. Each car had the emblem 40/8 stenciled on the sides, which meant that it could carry 40 men or 8 horses. These cars were known as forty-and-eights. They were seen by the troops as a miserable way to travel, and the new organization was thus called the 40 & 8 in an attempt to make some light of the common misery they had all shared. The 40et8 Societe seperated from the American Legion, but still works closely with them, and the VFW, to promote a positive veteran community.

The Forty et Eight 🇺🇸🚂🇨🇵 is in the business of building fun activities and events to promote patriotic values, good deeds, and a strong veteran community. The work we do at our Veterans Club is aimed at providing a worthy approach to solving some of our society’s challenges. We make sure our community is empowered by creating opportunities for veterans, individuals, and families to come together for the common good. 👍

We try to give veterans from all wars periods access to the right resources, to become empowered by their own abilities and gain the confidence to fulfill their potential. We offer guidance on navigating the VA system, and how to go about filing claims, appeals, and what to expect from a review. We offer resources to veterans that they might not know they qualify for. Membership is open only to honorably discharged veterans and honorably serving members of the United States Armed Forces.
The 40et8 and La Femme's are committed to charitable and patriotic aims. Our purpose is to uphold and defend the United States Constitution of the United States, to promote the well-being of veterans, their widows, widowers, and orphans, and to actively participate in selected charitable endeavors, which include among others, programs that promote child welfare and nurses training.
La Societe De Femme
The La Societe De Femme is an organization formed in 1963 and associated with La Societe Des Quarante Hommes et Huit Cheveau (40/8), made up of female members affiliated with Voyageurs Militaire & Veterans. We have been confused with the 8&40 and 4&20 of the American Legion & Auxiliary, which we are not part of. Each of our units and officers are named after the French Railroad.🇫🇷 Our units and titles parallel the Voyageurs except that each unit is called Cabane (Caboose). All of our programs are the same as the 40et8, which aids the Voiture and works toward the betterment of La Societe as a whole. To be a member you must be 18 years of age and be affiliated with a 40et8'er, an American Legion Member or a Veteran. Our Dames of Cabane 946 🇨🇵🚂 🇺🇸 are very active in all of our programs.
